Testing the ROIDMI S2 vacuum cleaner

How we tested the ROIDMI S2 vacuum cleaner

We tested the ROIDMI S2 vacuum cleaner on both carpets and hard floors, looking at how effectively it picked up fine dirt as well as larger debris. We awarded up to 20 points for the following criteria:

Ease of use: (5 points) Is it comfortable to use | Is it light or heavy | Is it nimble and easy to manoeuvre | Does the brush tangle/is it easy to remove hair from the brush | Is it noisy?

Features: (6 points) What attachments are included | What features does it offer | What’s the dust capacity |

Cleaning results: (6 points) Does it vacuum well | Is the suction good on both carpets and hard floors | If cordless, does it have a good run time?

Value for money: (3 points) Is the quality good | Is it worth the money | Does it come with a warranty?

Easy to use:

Weighing in at 2.7kg, the ROIDMI S2 is lightweight but still packs a punch. Featuring a sleek, ergonomic design, the 270-degree handle provides a wide range of comfortable grip positions, and the simple, switch-on-and-go button makes for easy operation.

The vacuum head is flexible and manoeuvres easily around corners and beneath low furniture – so there’s no excuse for missing that often-neglected area under the sofa. Additionally, the metal wand can be detached from the main unit and replaced with a variety of accessories, turning it into a nifty handheld vacuum.

Emptying the dust cup requires some dismantling as the HEPA filter and cyclone also need to be removed, however, this is easy enough to do once you get the hang of it – just ensure the filter is placed back correctly, otherwise the vacuum won’t turn on!

During our extensive testing, clogging of the roller was prevented thanks to the anti-tangle brush teeth. The roller, along with the HEPA filter (ROIDMI recommends replacing this every 3 months) and cyclone, can all be easily cleaned with the brush provided or under running water.

The triple noise-cancelling technology of the S2 is evident, with Eco Mode emitting a quiet hum, though noise levels increased when switching to Standard or Turbo mode.

ROIDMI S2 Vacuum

Features:

The ROIDMI S2 boasts a greener clean, using over 85% less energy than a typical mains-powered vacuum. Additionally, a full charge, which takes 2.5 hours, costs less than 5p and has a run time of around an hour in Eco mode. We found our own experience reflected this during testing.

The magnetic charging dock can be screwed into the wall or, for those who rent, a handy adhesive strip is also provided. If neither of these options takes your fancy, the power adapter can be plugged directly into the vacuum.
One of our favourite features of the S2 is its built-in sensor light on the floorhead, a useful tool for cleaning up any dust bunnies or debris you might usually miss in those pesky darker areas.

Like many vacuums, the S2 comes with a range of accessories that cover all cleaning bases, including a crevice tool, a dusting brush and a mattress brush (intended for beds and other textile surfaces). After eagerly testing them all, we found the latter was perfect for picking up all those little crumbs that lurk in between the cushions on the sofa.

Having tested in a one-bed flat we found we didn’t need to empty the 0.4l dustbin too often but more trips to the bin may be required for those who live in larger homes.

A unique feature of the ROIDMI S2 is its Bluetooth-connected app which provides a run-down of the vacuum’s battery health, dustbin capacity, cumulative cleaning time and area, and any potential faults. Whilst not entirely essential, we found it to be useful and informative.

ROIDMI S2 Vacuum

Results:

The default mode of the S2 is Eco, which we found did the trick on our wooden floors, though we had to step it up a gear to Standard mode in higher traffic areas like the kitchen. However, switching to either Standard or Turbo mode does reduce battery life so more frequent charging may be needed.

Whilst it glides effortlessly on hard floors, a little more effort is required on carpets.

Value for money:

The ROIDMI S2 has a generous five-year guarantee on the motor and a two-year guarantee on the vacuum cleaner itself.

New to market, the S2 has an RRP of £419. This seems like a fair price for this high quality, stylish vacuum which, in the long run, offers a great return on investment due to its eco-credentials – especially as it can currently be purchased for £99 at a number of retailers.
