In the penultimate episode of Interior Design Masters series four the three remaining contestants, Tom, Monika and Jack each took on the task of making over a hair salon in the vibrant city of Bristol (which also happens to be YourHomeStyle's stomping ground!).
In perhaps the closest call yet on the elimination sofa, head judge Michelle Ogundehin and guest judge Mary Portas decided it was sadly Tom's turn to leave the competition.
Hi Tom, it was so lovely to watch you throughout Interior Design Masters! We loved your designs and were so sorry to see you eliminated this week but we hope you had an amazing experience.
What inspired you to enter the show?
I’ve always loved watching design shows and especially Interior Design Masters and have often thought I should apply and see what I could create for the briefs in the time and budget given. Last year I finally bit the bullet and sent off my application and would do the whole thing in a heartbeat again.
What interior design style would you say you most align with and why?
I don’t believe I fall into any design style. I try and allow each project to dictate what it needs. But I do have overarching feelings that I want to achieve with all my designs. I want spaces to be casual yet refined, and I want spaces to feel warm, cosy and safe.
One of the key elements of your challenge was lighting. What would you say is the most important thing to consider when incorporating lighting into a design?
Definitely the key to good lighting is layering. Try and use all the elements, wall lights, table lamps, spotlights pendents etc. all on dimmers and all with warm white bulbs!
What interior wisdom from Michelle will stay with you?
Mitchelle messaged me after the elimination and said “Passion is Power“ and I’m taking that with me.
Has the show changed how you view interior design? Will you do anything differently now?
I’ll try and listen to my gut instincts more.
And... what's next?!
I’ve set up TomPowerDesign and have been working on some residential projects between filming the show and it airing. I’m excited to see what other opportunities come from it!
