Just as spending time around plants has been proven to lower pulse rate and cortisol levels, studies into the concept of shinrin-yoku, or ‘forest bathing,’ have shown that looking at green walls can have a therapeutic effect on your mood, therefore making it a perfect choice for the place where you relax, wind down and sleep.

And don't think green is just for the bedroom! Green is also a also a great colour for bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens.

What shades of green are good for a bedroom?

When it comes to choosing the shade of green you want for your bedroom, it might help if you first start by deciding on what sort of vibe you want the room to have.

If you’re a lover of open and airy Scandi-style, for example, you might prefer the look of a soft, uplifting mint on the walls, while those who favour relaxed, boho decor might rather go for something a bit more grungy, like deep olive green. If your dream bedroom is moody and dramatic with a touch of luxe, Art Deco inspired jewel tones will help you achieve a glamorous look, while avocado shades will add instant retro vibes - think Mid-Century Modern cool.

If you’re still finding it hard to narrow down which sort of green is right for your bedroom, it’s also worth taking into account the type of property you’re going to be painting. While bright, vibrant greens do a great job of adding character to a new build, muted shades might be more suitable if you’re renovating a period property.

If in doubt, the colour palettes from era your home was built will be a great indicator as to which shades might best suit your space - Georgian and Edwardian properties look great with rustic, heritage tones, while Victorian properties might better suit a Gothic-esque dark green.

Lighting is also another important factor to consider when finding the right shade of green paint, as while a sage green may look beautiful and fresh in a room that gets plenty of natural light, its grey undertones might cause it to look slightly gloomy in a naturally darker room.

This isn’t to say, however, that you should always opt for brighter shades in darker rooms. Done right, dark greens – like deep forest green or emerald – can transform smaller, darker rooms into sumptuous jewels. Embrace the cosiness of dark decor!

What colours go with green in a bedroom?

Once you’ve decided on the tone of green that’s going to be the main shade in your room, the next step is to compile a complementary colour palette. Again, the colours you choose for your room will be largely dependent on the overall feel you’re trying to create in the space, but if you’re in need of some inspiration, these are some of our favourite, classic combos:

Green and earth tones

If you’ve chosen a green scheme in order to help you feel closer to nature, this is the colour combination that’ll likely speak to you the most.

Earth tones are – quite literally – rooted in nature, so when they’re combined with green, they’ll have a lovely, soothing effect on a space. Choose light, putty tones for an open, airy feel, or opt for something a bit more intense – like Brave Ground or terracotta – if you like your spaces to feel warm and cocooning.

Pink and green bedroom

The Instagram combo that isn’t going anywhere, pink and green interiors are trending – and for good reason. Like green, pink is an extremely versatile colour with great range, so together the colours can be used to create pretty much any look you want.

Shaunna has used green and blush pink in her bedroom before furnishing it with investment purchases like the Benson for Beds ottoman. ‘In our last house, the main bedroom never got decorated and it ended up being the dumping ground. I wanted our bedroom to be a priority, so we had a relaxing space to retreat to at the end of the day’

Go sleek and sophisticated with dusky pink and sage, achieve a vintage look with ice-cream pastels or be bold with zesty lime and coral. The options are endless, and guaranteed to create an impact!

Green and white bedroom

If you’re a lover of the wholesome cottagecore aesthetic, this is the combo for you.
