What colours will be in style in 2022?

Dusty pinks

According to search trend analysis by The Paint Shed, 'dusky pinks, terracottas and exposed plaster inspired shades are a key 2022 trend for brightening and warming rooms'.

The 2020/21 craze for soothing neutrals soon evolved to include pastels like pale pink, and from there we're seeing a growing appetite for pinks with a little bit more body while still evoking those natural, calming vibes.

That means dusty pinks reminiscent of a sunset sky, as well as the brownish pinks of terracotta and raw plaster with their rustic, untreated look.

Light blues

Dulux Colour of the Year 2022 Bright Skies

When Dulux named Bright Skies as the 2022 Colour of the Year, we were thrilled to see an uplifting sky blue at the front and centre of colour trends - not that we didn't love 2021's Brave Ground, but after such a strong earth tone we were ready to soar skywards.

So, in 2022, expect to see light and airy blues all over your social media feeds - and you'll feel all the happier about it, as blue is one of the few colours that has both an uplifting and a calming effect.

Classic black

Sometimes a daunting colour for amateur decorators, when used right black is a timeless, sophisticated and even warming shade for use throughout your home. Whether its inky black kitchens or dusty black walls, the darkest shades on the spectrum are going to be everywhere in 2022.

'Black is clean, classic and not to be overlooked,' says Rachel Epstein, design specialist and creative director of CARME Home. 'If you’re looking to keep your home on trend, we would recommend black accent furniture first to test the waters, like a new dressing table.'

Natural greens

Biophilia - the style trend which has had us all filling our home with plants, both real and artificial, for the past few years - shows no signs of disappearing. And our growing love of leafy houseplants seems to have worked up an appetite for more green in the home in general, with more natural tones like sage and olive emerging as particular favourites.

This trend is even more pronounced in the US, where major brands like Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore choose green hues as their colour of 2022. So expect to see naturalistic green hues continue to surge in popularity for every room of the home, but especially kitchens and bathrooms.

Sunny yellow

Babouche, Farrow & Ball

The yellows we can expect to see in 2022 run the gamut from lighter tones like Coloro's Butter - singled out as one to watch by trend forecaster WGSN - to the rich and vibrant deep yellow of Babouche, one of Farrow and Ball's colours of 2022. But what they all have in common is their sunny, uplifting quality, which will be so welcome as we start to emerge from winter into spring - we can't wait!
