For effective layering, think about the direction you’re applying your leaves in and work backwards.

How to make your mini Christmas wreaths

Step 1

Using the templates, cut out leaves for each wreath. For the pomegranate wreath, cut five fig leaves from the dark green felt, 10 olive leaves from the olive green felt, and 16 eucalyptus leaves from the sage green felt.

For the fig wreath, cut 10 fig leaves in dark green and 30 olive leaves in olive green.

For the pear wreath, cut six fig leaves in dark green, eight olive leaves in olive green and eight eucalyptus leaves in sage green. For the berry wreath, cut 60 olive leaves in olive green.

Step 2

Use light green embroidery thread and straight stitch to add veins onto the fig leaves, using the main image as a guide.

Step 3

Cut a 50cm (193⁄4") length of rustic wire. Bend into a circular shape, then use pliers to twist the ends around each other to secure in place.

Cover the join in brown floral tape, then repeat three times to create four hoop bases.

Step 4

To make the eucalyptus sprigs for the pomegranate and pear wreaths, take the floral wire and cut one 18cm (⁷¹⁄₈") length and eight 9cm (³⁵⁄₈") lengths.

Apply glue to the base of a eucalyptus leaf and attach it to one end of a 9cm (³⁵⁄₈") length by pinching it so the wire is sandwiched in place.

Repeat with the remaining seven leaves.

Attach each short stem to the long 18cm (⁷¹⁄₈") length by wrapping green floral tape around the wires as you move downwards.

Apply short stems to about 11cm (⁴³⁄₈") of the long stem, then repeat twice more.

Step 5

Next, add the foliage to each hoop, using the main image as a guide to placement. To add the eucalyptus sprigs, twist the bottom of the long stem around the hoop.

Attach the leaves to the hoop by applying glue to the back of each leaf and sticking in place. Start with the larger leaves, arranging the smaller leaves in between.

Step 6

To make the figs, use the templates to cut six fig outers from purple felt, six fig centres in white, and six fig seeds in raspberry.

Use burgundy thread and straight stitch to embroider seed details onto the raspberry felt, then use white thread and straight stitch to embroider dashes around it, as shown.

Whipstitch this onto the fig centre, then use raspberry thread to embroider dashes around the edges of the white fig shape. Layer on top of the fig outer and whipstitch all three layers together.

Step 7

To make the pomegranates, use the templates to cut six outers from red felt, six centres in pale yellow, and six sets of seeds in red.

Use two strands of brown thread to embroider long straight stitches at the top of both the outer and centre shapes.

Use a black felt tip to draw circles onto the four seed shapes, then embroider a small dash in each circle with white thread. Layer up the shapes and whipstitch together as per Step 6.

Step 8

To make the pears, use the templates to cut four pear outers from light green felt, four pear centres from cream felt and four pear stalks from brown felt.

Use brown thread to embroider pips onto the centres and dashes on the stalk. Layer the shapes, whipstitch together, then use light green thread to embroider dashes along the right-hand edge of the pear.

Step 9

To make the cranberries for the pear wreath, thread a needle with white thread, insert it into one end of a burgundy felt ball, pull it through to the other side, then make a small stitch.

Make another stitch over the first to create a cross, then add another two diagonally to make a star shape.

Repeat with the red felt balls and black thread to make redcurrants for the pear and berry wreaths.

Step 10

To assemble the wreaths, apply glue to the back of each fruit patch and attach to the leaves or the hoop, again, following the main image. Take care to place each patch in the foliage.

To add the berries, apply glue to the bottom and attach to the wreath.
