You will need

  • old pair of trousers
  • tailor’s chalk or pencil
  • paper for pattern
  • dressmaker’s scissors
  • pins
  • thread
  • sewing machine
  • black fabric scraps or felt
  • 2 buttons
  • black pompom
  • fabric glue
  • needle
  • old rags or tights, capok, polystyrene balls or dry rice for stuffing

Step 1

Measure the width of your door. Make a template by drawing a sausage dog shape onto a piece of paper. Ensure it is as wide as your door, that the body measures 13cm high and the head and tail are 23cm high. Draw a 1.5cm seam allowance around the dog shape, except along the bottom edge. Cut your template out.

Step 2

Place the template on top of one trouser leg with the bottom edge of the template aligned with the inside leg seam. Pin the template in place, then cut out. Pin the cut edges of the fabric together with right sides facing, then sew a 1.5cm seam all the way round, leaving a 10cm gap unsewn at the tail for stuffing. Turn the sausage dog right sides out, then stuff with your chosen filling. Once sufficiently stuffed, slipstitch the tail end opening closed.

Step 3

Cut two oval shapes from felt 14cmL x 9cmW and slipstitch one to either side of the dog’s head.

Step 4

Sew buttons for eyes on either side of the head. Glue a pompom to the end of nose. Finish by adding a collar – you could use an old dog collar, a piece of ribbon or a length of felt, stitched into place.
